A/4 + A = 8¾

From the first line, we know that A = 4 x A/4 . Next, 8¾ can be rewritten as the improper fraction 35/4 .

So we rewrite as :

A/4 + 4 x A/4 = 35/4

5 x A/4 = 35/4

A/4 = 35/4 ÷ 5

A/4 = 7/4

A = 7

I wonder if the missing signs in the first line is a typo or is intended to be that way.

Meant to be that way. Missing 1 sign , still passable. Missing all 3 plus signs is too much to be a careless error.

Highly likely the idea is to show four A/4 makes up 1 A , similar to those examples along the lines of :

♤ ♤ ♤ ♤ = ♠
♠+♤ = 5
♠ = ?

Students at P4 are usually taught to visualise addition using symbols. This is a early prelude or preamble towards algebra in fraction form
