1 square's area = ⅓ of shaded rectangle's area

2 squares' area = ⅔ of shaded rectangle's area

Notice that the two squares joined together, form an unshaded rectangle.

So this rectangle's area also = ⅔ of shaded rectangle's area

This rectangle has the same length as the shaded one. But since it has ⅔ of the shaded rectangle's area, it means that its breadth is ⅔ of the shaded rectangle's.

So its breadth = ⅔ x 6cm = 4cm

But the breadth is also equal to the side of a square. So 1 side of a square = 4cm

Length of unshaded rectangle = 2 sides of a square
= 4cm x 2
= 8cm

These two rectangles form a large rectangle.

Breadth = 8cm (equal to length of the two smaller rectangles)

Length = sum of the two rectangles' breadths

= 4cm + 6cm
= 10cm

Total area

= 10cm x 8cm
= 80cm²
