Method with answers 2 and -3 is correct

The method on the right where you got x = 2 and - 3 is correct. The method on the left is wrong because there is number 4 on the right side of equation. It only works if the number on the right side is 0, and in that case if (x-a) (x-b) =0 then x = a or x = b.
