Hi Alicia, if you see the diagram, you will notice that if you combine the 2 smaller triangles, it will form a big triangle. So total there are 2 big grey triangles now.
And if you try to put the big triangle beside each other, you will notice that half of the big ABCD square is occupied by a big grey triangle and the other half is a big white triangle.
So, the ratio of shaded parts is 1:2 to the big ABCD square.
