The answer is 64 cm sq. However, I need a clear explanation on how to get the answer as I only get 56 cm sq.

Altogether a total of 4 small squares of length 2 cm are discarded in overlapping the figure.

Area of whole figure is 128 cm2.

Area of the 4 identical large squares, without any overlapping
= 128 + 4 x 2 x 2
= 128 + 16
= 144 cm2

Area of each large square is 36 cm2.

Length of each square is 6 cm.

I got 56 cm as my perimeter as (4 + 6 + 4) x 4 = 56..

I am pretty sure that the given answer, 64, counts the middle square as well, and I disagree with the answer. That section of the figure should not count as the perimeter of the object only counts the outer surrounding of the figure and does not include the perimeter of the missing square as well.

The inside perimeter is called as the "internal" perimeter.

Without mentioning carefully, I would take "perimeter" as only the "external" perimeter of the figure.

Perimeter means the outline only so your 56cm is correct, Xeno

There is a debate on this online though

This is the same as what is being used by the syllabus. Basically the outer edge.

Xeno, check with your teacher if the middle square's outline should be included in the calculation.

Perhaps it is included as it is exposed to the outside.

However, 64 cm sq is the suggested answer. Anyway, i think the question is not clear enough as most of the comments also suggested for clearer explanation on the "perimeter" issue. By the way, thanks for those who had suggested and commented on this question.
