I kept getting 668, which is wrong. Where is wrong. Please help.

1494 - 1178 = 316
316 ÷ 4 = 79
589 + 79 = 668..

You are correct. The answer is given as 747 because whoever that worked out that answer has made the following mistake :
1494 - 589 - 589 = 316
Instead of dividing by 4, the person divided by 2.
316 ÷ 2 = 158
158 + 589 = 747
1494 - 589 - 589 = 316
Instead of dividing by 4, the person divided by 2.

Alternative way to do this question :
1494 + 589 + 589 = 2672
This is the same as 4 carpets.
2672 ÷ 4 = 668
1494 + 589 + 589 = 2672
