gf (x) = some expression in terms of x = 5
Solve for x

Okay thanks! Thought so too, just that school provided answer was to let gf(x)=5 which threw me off.

It means sub x=5 into (gf)-1(x).

Since inverse graphs have their X and Y coordinates swapped, X=5 in (gf)-1(x) is actually Y=5 for its inverse ie gf(x)=5.

Which is why your schools provided answer let gf(x)=5.

If (gf)-¹(5) = a, then gf (a) = 5

The coordinates for a point on a function are always reverse when you map the point onto its inverse function.

They are reflections/mirror images of each other about the line y = x.

Eg. (a,b) on function ↔ (b,a) on inverse

So let gf(x) = 5

Solve for x. This is the 'hence' method.

The 'otherwise' method would be to find (gf)-¹ (x) then sub x = 5.
