For a, the whole number 1 can be written as 1/1. To add it with the fraction, raise the denominator to 3, which automatically makes the top 3 as well.
For b, get rid of the left denominator by multiplying 6 by 3k -5. Simplify and you get 3 + 7k = 18k - 30. Simplify again to get 33 = 11k. So k = 3.
