Multiples of 5 between 40 and 50: 40, 45, 50. Since there are 3 extra children, possible number of children are :
43, 48, 53 (reject 53 since >50)
Multiple of 6 between 40 and 50 : 42, 48
48 - 5 = 43 (minus 5 since there will be 5 short)
There are 43 children at the party.

second question:
a)Total of excess and shortage = 12+24 = 36
There are 36 pupils
b)No. of sweets = (36 x3) + 12 = 120

Note : imagine the children in the classroom. Mrs Ang goes round giving each pupil one sweet at a time. When she is finished giving each pupil 3 sweets, she has 12 left. She tries to go one more round. When she has given away the 12 sweets, there are 24 pupils that did not get the 4th sweet.
