Basically, the number must be a common multiple of 4 and 6. Since the lowest common multiple of 4 and 6 is 12, the number chosen must also be a multiple of 12.

The same number must leave a remainder of 4 when divided by 8.

This means that every alternate number in the multiple list for 12, namely 12, 24, 36, 48. must be divisible by 8 and the other numbers leave a remainder of 4.

So the lowest possible number of sweets is 12. And the next is 36. And the next is 60. And so on.
