When a paper is being folded, the angle of folding is equal to the original angle folded.

b = 90 - 22 - 22
= 46

a = (90 - 44) / 2
= 23

so a + b is 69 degrees.

You may wish to take a used paper, fold it to an angle and measure the relevant angles to demonstrate this concept.

Place a ruler vertically along the line of the fold, with the long side on the line.

Demonstrate that the two angles are mirror images of each other. You can use your left and right palm to demonstrate this concept by mapping one to the other side.

If possible, use a clear piece of transparency sheet and mark the angles with a marker. So your child can see the angle from behind
