Please help me to this question. I know I must change the denominator to 8, but I confuse about the + and - sign.

(y - 1)/4 - (3y + 1)/8 = 1

2(y - 1)/(4 x 2) - (3y + 1)/8 = 1

(2y - 2)/8 - (3y + 1)/8 = 1

(2y - 2 - (3y + 1))/ 8 = 1

(2y - 2 - 3y - 1)/8 = 1

(2y - 3y - 2 - 1)/8 = 1

(-y - 3)/8 = 1

-y - 3 = 8

-y = 8 + 3

-y = 11

y = -11

Shorter working to use if you can understand the previous one already :

(y - 1)/4 - (3y + 1)/8 = 1

(2y - 2)/8 - (3y + 1)/8 = 1

(2y - 2 - 3y - 1)/8 = 1

(-y - 3)/8 = 1

-y - 3 = 8

y = -3 - 8
= -11
