Difference unchanged

5 - 1 = 4

At first , ratio of mothers age to her age to their difference = 5 : 1 : 4

2 years later,

4 - 1 = 3

ratio of mothers age to her age to their difference = 4 : 1 : 3

The difference is unchanged so the units must be the same.

Common multiple of 4 and 3 is 12.
(4 x 3 = 12, 3 x 4 = 12)

Multiply by 3,
Ratio at first = 5 : 1 : 4 = 15 : 3 : 12

Multiply by 4,
Ratio after 2 years = 4 : 1 : 3 = 16 : 4 : 12

From this we can see that their ages increased by 1 unit.

So 1 unit = 2 years
