There are several approaches to this question.

1) the right hand side of the equation is a double angle for cosine. So
cos^2(x)- sin^2(x) = cos(2x).

Substitute cos(2x) and solve from there

2) cos^2(x) + sin^2(x) =1
Cos^2(x) = 1-sin^2(x)

Substitute this in the equation and rearrange to have sin^2(x) on one side. Solve from there. Similarly you can use this method with substituting sin^2(x) instead
