Let the normal hour = x
Let the Overtime hour = y
X+y = 54
X = 54 - y ---(1)

Normal rate = 2.80
Overtime rate = 1.5 x 2.8 = 4.2
2.8x + 4.2y = 173.60 ----(2)
Sub (1) into (2)
2.8(54-y) )+ 4.2y = 173.60
151.2 - 2.8y + 4.2y = 173.60
1.4y = 22.4
y = 22.4/1.4
y= 16

He work 16 hours overtime.

Alternative :

For those overtime hours, he is getting paid 1½ times the usual rate.

So subtract away the normal amount for all 54 hours first.

54 x $2.80 = $151.20

$173.60 - $151.20 = $22.40

$22.40 is the sum of all the extra pay from overtime. Each overtime hour yields an extra ½ hour's worth of pay.

½ hour's worth of pay = $2.80 ÷ 2
= $1.40

Amount of hours done overtime

= $22.40 ÷ $1.40
= 16
