One Answer Below
Anyone can contribute an answer, even non-tutors.
can i have an explanation why the answer is option 3? (catholic high paper)
What i know is that small intestine is where the most amount of digestion occurs
and absorption starts.
the question seem to be asking me which organ main role is for absorption/digestion, that means it only does that?
why is small intestine mainly involved in absorption of food when the large intestine is the organ that has the main job to absorb food?
Fact : most of the digestion and absorption takes place in the small intestine.
(You will learn at higher levels that the the stomach actually does some absorption, but it is only for very few substances eg. certain lipid-soluble compounds like aspirin, some kinds of non-steroidal anti-infammatory drugs, and ethanol (alcohol).
Absorption is only a very minor part of the stomach's function. So the main organ involved in absorption is still the small intestine. )
Now,
'organ mainly involved in' means 'what does this organ mainly do?'
For the label "organ mainly involved in the absorption of food" , only C fits it as the other parts either do not absorb food at all or only does very minor absorption.
As for the label "organ mainly involved in the digestion of food" ,
It is correct to say that the stomach is mainly involved in digestion of food.
It is also correct to say that the small intestine is mainly involved in digestion of food (in addition to absorption)
So for this label, either B or C will fit.
This label is not asking 'which organ does most of digestion?'
Therefore, only (3) is the correct answer among the four.
These two options appear, and they are
① C,B
and
② C,C
② would be the better answer.
But this is unlikely to happen as both could be considered to be a correct answer. The setters would make the options unambiguous to choose from.
