The trick here is :

The unshaded part consists of 2 unshaded triangles, with a common base of 7cm.

Their heights add up to 28cm (1 side of the square)

So their combined area is simply

½ x 7cm x (height of one unshaded triangle)

+

½ x 7cm x (height of the other unshaded triangle)

= ½ x 7cm x (height of one + height of other)

= ½ x 7cm x 28cm

= 98cm²

Area of shaded part
= Area of square - area of unshaded part
= 28 cm x 28 cm - 98 cm²
= 784 cm² - 98 cm²
= 686 cm²

Welcome. Edited a typo. It's 98cm² instead of 96cm²
