I think some precautions to take note are....

1) Do not allow the spot to dip in the solvent.
2) Always use a good quality pencil for the reference line so that the mark will not dissolve into the solvent during the process.
3)The spots for the sample should be small and rich in mixture.
4)Ensure that the strip is not curled.
5)Allow the spot to dry before putting it in the beaker.
