There is also that geometrical proof for the area of a trapezium.

In the formula 0.5 (a + b) (h), the expression 0.5 (a + b) just means the average of the two parallel lengths. If you do some cutting and rearranging of the trapezium, you will get a rectangle which has a length that is halfway between a and b, or the average of a and b.
