Now, if there is air resistance and downwards is taken to be positive, then this is what happens at the starting.

The air resistance acts downwards as the object moves upwards. This amplifies the effect of the gravity, so that the overall acceleration exceeds g. The acceleration will always decrease over time, to a value of g at the highest point and then will decrease further as the air resistance now acts upwards and will diminish the effect of the gravity.
