(a)

Let the cost of his goods be 100 units.

New price after the raise = 110 units
Price after discount = 90% of 110 units = 99 units

Overall discount
= 1 unit out of 100 units (based on the old price)
= 1%

(b)

Let the length of the rectangle be 10 units and the breadth of the rectangle be 10 parts.

Old area = 10 units x 10 parts = 100 units-parts

New length = 12 units
New breadth = 8 parts

New area = 12 units x 8 parts = 96 units-parts

This is a decrease of 4% of the original area.

(c)

Let the length of the rectangle be 10 units and the breadth of the rectangle be 10 parts.

Old area = 10 units x 10 parts = 100 units-parts

New length = 12 units

Since the area remains unchanged,

New breadth
= 100 units-parts / 12 units
= 8.33333333333333... parts

This is a 16.66666666666...% decrease in the breadth, or 16.7%.
