Height of pile
= Number of books x Thickness of each book
= (2a + b) x 2
= 2 x (2a + b)
= 2 x 2a + 2 x b
= 4a + 2b
Think of 2 x (5 + 3) and see whether it's the same as 2 x 5 + 2 x 3.
