"... without evaluating A or B, ..." means we do not calculate out the actual angles in terms of degrees or radians.

Instead, we sketch out the angles and use Pythagoras theorem to determine the other trigonometric ratios.

Use compound angle formulas to work out final answer.

From the diagram, since A is in 1st quadrant, shouldnt cos A = -7/25 ?

remember your A S T C
in 1st quadrant All positive
in 2nd quadrant Sin positive
in 3rd quadrant Tan positive
in 4th quadrant Cos positive

so in 1st quadrant, cos A = (+)7/25.
