5, 2, 3 cannot be present. But 8 and 1 also cannot be present.

This is because 5, 2 and 3 are explicitly said to be not present, whereas for the 8, it cannot be in the correct place in 189 AND in the wrong place in 286 at the same time. For the same reason, 1 cannot be present as well, taking reference from 147 and 189.

Since 1 and 8 cannot be present, 9 has to be present (from 189) AND it has to be the third digit.

Now, in 286, 6 has to be present, but it has to be in the first or second position.

Because 9 and 6 are already present as mentioned earlier, 4 cannot be present (taking reference from 964). This leaves 7 as the last digit present. So, the number is either 679 or 769.

Finally, the 6 in 964 is in the wrong position. So, 6 has to be in the first digit. There we are, the number is 679.

I am able to read this partly because I regularly play the game “Guess the Code” where the mechanics of the game is very similar to this scenario.
