Keep multiplying by -3 from term to term, and you get x = -3 and y = -27.

Check that -3 * (-3) = 9 as well.

(b)

Letting n = 16, the 16th term
= 3 * 16 * (16 + 4)
= 3 * 16 * 20
= 48 * 20
= 960
