C had $96 more than H.

When H gives away $36 to C, H loses $36 AND C gains $36 at the same time.

So now, C has $168 (and not $132) more than H.

[Think of it this way. You and your friend hold a $5 note each. After you give your friend the $5 note, your friend will have $10 (not $5) more than you, because you lose $5 AND your friend gains $5 at the same time.]

Now, C has 4 times as much money as H, so the extra 3 units of money correspond to the $168.

3 units = $168
1 unit = $56
4 units = $224

At the end, C has $224.

So, C has $224 - $36 = $188 at first (and H has $56 + $36 = $92 at first).

Check that C - H = $188 - $92 = $96 as per the information in the question.
