Before,

Pears : 60% = 60/100 = 3/5
Apples : 100% - 60% = 40% = 40/100 = 2/5

Ratio of pears to apples at first = 3 : 2

After :

Pears : 30% = 30/100 = 3/10
Apples : 100% - 30% = 70% = 70/100 = 7/10

Ratio of pears to apples now = 3 : 7

Note that the number of apples didn't change as none were given away.

So we should make the number of units for apples the same.

3 : 2 = 21 : 14 (multiply by 7)
3 : 7 = 6 : 14 (multiply by 2)

This tells us there were 21 units of pears at first. And there are 6 units of pears now.

21 - 6 = 15
So 15 units of pears were given away.

15 units = 60
1 unit = 60 ÷ 15 = 4

Number of apples in the basket
= 14 units
= 14 x 4
= 56
