Which combination of areas can give you 45cm² ?

It's 36cm² and 9cm²

36 + 9 = 45

So the bigger square is 6cm by 6cm and the smaller one is 3cm by 3cm

Area of smaller square = 3cm x 3cm = 9cm²

Area of bigger square = 6cm x 6cm = 36cm²

36cm² + 9cm² = 45cm²

For the perimeter, there are 3 sides of each square that are not covered.

For the last side of each square, the small square covered part of the big square. So this means that 3cm is covered. Only 3cm is exposed.

Perimeter

= 3 x 6cm + 3 x 3cm + 3cm
= 18cm + 9cm + 3cm
= 30cm

You have to analyse the figure properly to get the answer correct. I hope my workings are not too messy.
