Sam's current age: e
Sam's age in 10 years: e + 10

Mother's age in 10 years: 3 * (e + 10), or 3e + 30
Mother's age now: 3e + 30 - 10 = 3e - 20

Normally what you do is this.

"Sam is 5 years old now. In 10 years time, his mother will be thrice as old as he."

Sam's age in 10 years = 15
Mother's age = 15 * 3 = 45

Mother's age now = 45 - 10 = 35

We do likewise for the question, except with e instead of 5.
