Where did the 3 and 5 come from for the base?

sorry its 3-t and t-3. 3 is the x-coordinate of C.

Isn't the height supposed to be 4 since the y coordinate of K is 4?

since C & K are on the same axis, we consider that horizontal distance to be the base thus height = y-cord of C - y-cord of B = 3.

Be mindful that B's x coordinate is that of 1 and not 0 thus height = 4-1

Oh okay. Why must you write t-3 and 3-t? What's the difference between these 2?

since K's y-cord is that of 4, it's x-cord can either be on the positive end of the x-axis or on the negative end of the x-axis. thus base of triangle would be -t (if it is on the negative side) + 3 = 3-t or t-3 (if it is on the positive side)

actually i think to be more accurate, t could be negative all the way up till before 3. then, it will constitute to 3-t. any value of t after 3 will be that of t-3. hope that clarifies :)
