red: 2/3 x 30u =20u
blue: 1/3 x 30u =10u

all blue = 12u + 10u = 22u

Hi Jane, this is called the Branch Method, and it can be confusing with all these lines everywhere and multiplication of fractions. Maybe a model would help. I’ll get home soon and produce a drawing.

here’s my attempt to use models. drawing 45u is really painful, so you’ll need to know how to multiply fractions (1/3 of 10/15 in my example).
