For the digit in the ones place, either 2 x 1 = 2 or 3 x 4 = 12 can give you that.

So the digit in the ones place and the single digit the 4-digit number is multiplied by is either a combination of 1 and 2, or 3 and 4

But the single digit that the 4 digit number is multiplied by cannot be 1, since it means you will need '8' in the thousands place. But there is no 8 given to us to use.

Possible cases :

Ones digit is 1, single digit is 2
Ones digit is 3, single digit is 4
Ones digit is 4, single digit is 3

This question requires you to guess intelligently and check. For me, the first thing I paid attention to was the digit 2 in the ones place. Given 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, we can only get 2 when we take 1x2 (or 2x1) or 3x4 (or 4x3). From there, I just applied guess and check one number at a time.
