Hi! My answer is 9 but my friend’s is 10. I would like to know the correct answer. Thanks!
I am going to assume that we can only buy the durians in groups of 3, so I can buy up to 9 durians.
In daily life, bulk purchases (a few at a time, rather than one by one) costs cheaper per piece because we buy them together, thus helping the owner to generate money. The better rate per piece also attracts us to buy them in bulk. A durian which goes 3 for $14 might be sold individually for say $5 or $6 per piece.
3 x 3 = 9
9 durians can be bought at most and Alex will have $8 left.
14 ÷ 3 = 14/3 = 4⅔ or 4.666666....
50 ÷ 4⅔ = 50 ÷ 14/3 = 50 x 3/14
= 150/14
= 75/7
= 10 5/7
So that's why his answer is 10 at most.
But in this question, the durians are not sold individually. So he can't do that
