One thing we can first do before hand is to complete the square for x^2 + 4x - 1.
x^2 + 4x - 1
= x^2 + 4x + 4 - 4 - 1
= (x + 2)^2 - 4 - 1
= (x + 2)^2 - 5
and this -5 gets brought over to the other side of the equation.
x^2 + 4x - 1
= x^2 + 4x + 4 - 4 - 1
= (x + 2)^2 - 4 - 1
= (x + 2)^2 - 5
and this -5 gets brought over to the other side of the equation.
