We factorise x2 - y2 into (x + y) (x - y).

x2 - y2 = 28
(x + y) (x - y) = 28

Since x + y = 4,

4 * (x - y) = 28
x - y = 7

In such questions, we do not actually need to find the individual values of x and y to obtain our answer.
