This one is rather challenging at your level.

ab + a^2 b^2 - a^3 b^3
= ab + (ab)^2 - (ab)^3
= factorise out common terms
= ab [1 + ab - (ab)^2]

(I am not even sure if you have learnt how to factorise expressions at the Sec 1 level by taking out common terms)

Then,

a^n b^n + ,,,
= (ab)^n + (ab)^(n+1) + (ab)^(n + 2)
= (ab)^n [1 + ab + (ab)^2]

I am not sure what they meant by "hence" in this case, as this approach of mine does not really use results from the earlier factorisation. I could attempt to convert the equation to fit the "hence" requirement, but I do not wish to do so as it will become more complicated for you.
