this is a question on composite figures.

this type of question normally requires you to find the area of a shape that you cannot directly calculate using your standard area formulas.

the way to solve is to express the given shape as a sum and difference of other shapes that you can calculate the areas.

in this case, shaded part BDG
= square ABFG + square CDEF
- triangle DEG - triangle ABG - triangle BCD.
