8 is a factor of 56.

2 and 4 are factors of 8.

Then, 2 and 4 are also factors of 56.

A factor of a factor is also a factor of the main number.

Similar things can be said about x2 - 3x- 4.

Long division works, but you would probably not want long divisions involving unknowns a and b.
