nos.
total: 32
3-leg: 1u
4-leg: 32 - 1u

legs
total: 117
3-leg: 1ux3 = 3u
4-leg: (32 - 1u) x 4 = 128 - 4u

3u + 128 - 4u = 117
1u = 11

3-leg = 11
4-leg = 21

Assumption method

assume all stools are 4-leg

legs
total: 4 x 32 = 128

but total = 117

diff. = 128 - 117 = 11

hence,
3-leg = 11
&
4-leg = 32 - 11 = 21

Assume all of the stools are 3-legged. Find the total number of legs and then the difference between the total number of legs given in the question and the one you just found.

Divide that by 1 (difference in 4-legs and 3-legs) and that's the number of 4-legged stools. Then find the number of 3-legged stools.
