80 = 2x2x2x2x5

140 = 2x2x5x7

180 = 2x2x3x3x5


common factors = 2x2x5

greatest possible length
= 2x2x5 = 20cm

*extra:
this means (for greatest length)
(i) four 20-cm from 80 cm
(ii) seven 20-cm from 140 cm
(iii) nine 20-cm from 180 cm

(b)
total smaller pieces = 4+7+9 = 20
(*assume each smaller piece is the greatest possible length)
