let J = Jack's marbles
Let I = Irene's marbles
J = (1/4)M ----- equ 1
I = (3/4)M ----- equ 2
J + 8 = (40/100) x (I - 8) ----- equ 3
sub equ 1 and 2 into equ 3
(1/4)M + 8 = (2/5) x ((3/4)M - 8)
(1/4)M + 8 = (3/10)M - 16/5
Multiply 20 throughout
5M + 160 = 6M - 64
6M - 5M = 160 +64
1M = 224
J = (1/4) x 224 = 56
