A case of differences.

The change from "needing 2 extra chocolates" to "needing 14 extra chocolates" is basically 12 chocolates.

This is because Jenny increases her chocolate giveaway to each friend from 5 chocolates to 8 chocolates, an increase of 3 chocolates.

Because she increases her giveaway to each friend by 3 chocolates, her total giveaway increases by 12 chocolates.

There must have been 12/3 = 4 friends in total.

Total number of chocolates
= 5 x 4 - 2 (she does not have the 2 chocolates necessary to give away perfectly)
= 18

Note that the extra 2 and 14 chocolates needed should be outside the original model as it is not part of Jenny's original chocolates.
