This is a topic about b^2 - 4ac.

(a)

You want some line to be a tangent to some quadratic curve.

This means that you want line = curve to have exactly one solution (because a tangent touches a quadratic equation at exactly one point).

So set the them to be equal, shift everything to one side, then set b^2 - 4ac = 0 to find p.

(b) A graph being always positive means it doesn't intersect the x -axis, which means there's is no solution for graph = 0.

So set b^2 -4ac < 0 to find k.
