For the function f(x) = 2x3 + x + 7, at the boundary limit x = -1, the value of f(x) is 2 (-1)^3 + (-1) + 7 = 4.

For the function to continue, f(x) must start at 4 (otherwise the graph will be broken).

So, m (x + 1) + k must start at 4 when x = -1.

m (-1 + 1) + k = 4
k = 4

Now, we look at the other connector.

At the upper end, x2 + 5 equals 9 when x = 2.

For the functions to connect, m (x + 1) + k must equal 9 when x = 2.

m (2 + 1) + k = 9
3m + 4 = 9
m = 5/3
