We cut the 26 x 16 board into 3 x 3 square pieces.

On the 26 cm side, 26 divided by 3 is 8 R 2 (we cannot do anything with the remainder, note that we are not allowed to rearrange the leftover board to form a square) while on the 16 cm side, 16 divided by 3 is 5 R 1.

Number of squares cut out
= 8 x 5
= 40

Number of triangles cut out
= 40 x 2
= 80
