lamp post consists of 2 parts:
silver part &
black part
total length is the sum of 2 parts
= silver add black
(a)
length of lamp post is (x+3) m
(b)
silver part is longer than black part
to find the difference, we subtract the shorter length from the longer length
so
silver part is longer than the black part by the length of
3 minus x = (3-x) m

Since this is algebra, x represents a number so you should just treat x as a regular number and work on the question as you would if x had a value.
