-a² - 2ab - b²
= -(a² + 2ab + b²)
= -(a + b)²

(a+b)⁴ = [(a + b)²]²

qn
= [(a + b)²]² - (a + b)² - 240

let A = (a + b)²
qn
= A² - A - 240
= (A - 16)(A + 15)

since A = (a + b)² ;
(A - 16)(A + 15)
= [(a + b)² - 16][(a + b)² + 15]

We have to do several rounds of factorisations for such questions. Substitutions for the sum a + b and its square can help us visualise the expression better.
