Last year, Gillian was also 8 years older than her brother, but also twice as old as her brother. So Gillian = 2 units of age last year, brother = 1 unit of age last year so Gillian is 1 unit older than her brother.
1 unit = 8 years
2 units = 16 years
Gillian’s age now = 16 + 1 = 17
1 unit = 8 years
2 units = 16 years
Gillian’s age now = 16 + 1 = 17
