Observe that x/3 is twice of x/6 and 2y/3 is twice of y/3.

You can multiply one equation by 2. One of the variables will be the same. Then we subtract both equations.

Multiplying the second equation by 2,

x/6 + 4y/3 = 8

The first equation is

x/6 + y/3 = 4

Subtracting both equations,

(x/6 + 4y/3) - (x/6 + y/3) = 8 - 4
3y/3 = 4
y = 4

Putting this into the first equation,

x/6 + 4/3 = 4
x/6 = 8/3
x = 48/3
x = 16

Even nicer is to let a = x/12 and b = y/3 so that you will get the equations

a + 2b = 4
2a + b = 4

And you can proceed from there.
