I have tried to play around with the k on a graph plotter and found that the solutions are

-2.055 < k < -1

and

3 < k < 4.055

The -2.055 and 4.055 can be easily obtained by using the fact that the equation has two real and distinct roots.

What I am trying to figure out is why the second inequality is 3 < k < 4.055 and not 2 < k < 4.055.

I have obtained the inequalities k < -1 and k > 2 from my workings in the first post, and apparently k > 2 is not correct for some reason. I will post an update once I am able to get around this mess.

EDIT: My first page working is invalid. Looking at the question from another angle, sorry for the delay

Candice, I will temporarily post this for now. I will attempt to figure out how to obtain -2.055 < k < -1, 3 < k < 4.055 when I have more time.
